What the treatment is

At a full exam the dentist looks for cavities, gum disease, worn or cracked teeth, bite problems and signs of oral cancer, reviews your medical history, and talks through any treatment you need. A cleaning is usually done at the same visit.

New patients usually have a comprehensive exam. Returning patients have shorter periodic exams. A limited exam focuses on one problem, such as a toothache.

Which cleaning you need depends on your gums. A routine cleaning (prophylaxis) is for healthy gums or mild gingivitis. If the exam finds widespread inflammation or gum disease, a different cleaning may be recommended.

Why it may be recommended

  • Finding problems early, when treatment is usually simpler and less expensive.
  • Removing hardened tartar that you cannot remove at home.
  • Screening for gum disease and oral cancer.
  • How often you need visits depends on your risk; twice a year is common but not right for everyone.

Benefits, limitations and possible risks

Benefits

  • Early detection of problems.
  • Fresher, cleaner teeth.
  • A plan for any treatment, with priorities.

Limitations

  • A routine cleaning cannot treat established gum disease.
  • X-rays and exams find most, but not all, problems.

Possible risks

  • Mild gum tenderness after cleaning.
  • X-rays involve a very small radiation dose; dentists take them based on need.

What happens during treatment

  1. 1

    Health history

Medications and health conditions affect dental care.

  2. 2

    X-rays as needed

Based on your history and when you last had them.

  3. 3

    Cleaning

The hygienist removes plaque and tartar and polishes the teeth.

  4. 4

    Exam

The dentist checks teeth, gums, bite and soft tissues.

  5. 5

    Treatment plan

Any findings are explained with options and costs.

Recovery and maintenance

  • Gums may be a little tender for a day.
  • Follow the recall interval your dentist recommends.

What affects the cost

X-rays
Whether X-rays are needed depends on your history and when you last had them.
Gum health
If the exam finds gum disease, a different type of cleaning may be recommended.
Type of exam
Comprehensive exams cost more than periodic exams.

Common additional charges

These are billed separately at many offices. Not every patient needs them.

X-raysBitewings, full series or panoramic.
FluorideOften separate for adults.
Different cleaning typeD4346, debridement or deep cleaning instead of a routine cleaning.

Procedure fee or total case cost?

A checkup visit total is usually the exam, any X-rays and the cleaning. Any treatment found is planned and priced separately.

Paying with insurance, without insurance, or with Medicaid/CHIP

With insurance

Most plans cover exams and routine cleanings as preventive care, often twice a year. Send your insurance information to the office to check.

Without insurance

Without insurance you pay the office's fee for the exam and the cleaning.

Medicaid and CHIP

Texas Medicaid and CHIP cover checkups and cleanings for eligible children. The office verifies eligibility.

Accepted at Arlington, Grand Prairie, and Commerce, subject to eligibility and plan verification.

Alternative treatments

Alternatives depend on your teeth and health. Ask your dentist to explain the trade-offs of each option, including doing nothing.

No real alternative
Home care is essential but cannot remove tartar or detect hidden problems.

Codes to ask your insurer about

Insurers price treatment by ADA CDT procedure code. The office confirms the exact code for your treatment; labels here are plain-English summaries.

Questions to ask your dentist

  • Do I need X-rays at this visit?
  • Is a routine cleaning right for me, or do you recommend something else? Why?
  • How often should I come in?

Frequently asked questions

How much does a dental exam and cleaning cost?

Prices on these pages are cash prices for patients without insurance. With insurance, the office verifies your coverage.

Why was I told I need a different cleaning?

If the gums show widespread inflammation, pocketing or bone loss, a routine cleaning is not enough. Ask to see your gum measurements and X-rays.
