What the treatment is

Complete (full) dentures replace all the teeth on the upper or lower jaw and rest on the gums. Partial dentures attach to remaining natural teeth with clasps or precision attachments.

If teeth need to be removed first, an immediate denture can be placed the same day, then adjusted or relined as the gums heal. Dentures can also be held by implants for more stability.

Dentures are made in a lab from impressions and records of your bite. Several try-in visits help get the fit, bite and appearance right.

Why it may be recommended

  • Many or all teeth are missing or cannot be saved.
  • Replacing several missing teeth at a lower cost than implants or bridges.
  • When surgery is not possible or not preferred.

Treatment types and variations

Tap a type to see when it is used and what to weigh. Your dentist recommends options after examining you.

Complete dentures

Economy complete dentureMade with stock teeth and fewer custom steps; lower cost.
Things to weigh
Fit and appearance may be less individualized, and it may wear faster.
Codes to ask about
D5110, D5120
Standard or premium complete dentureMore custom steps, better-quality teeth and base materials, and more attention to appearance and bite.
Things to weigh
Higher cost; not a guarantee of fit, because gum shape matters too.
Codes to ask about
D5110, D5120
Immediate dentureMade before extractions and placed the same day, so you are not without teeth.
Things to weigh
The gums shrink as they heal, so it usually needs a reline or a new denture later.
Codes to ask about
D5130, D5140

Partial dentures

Acrylic (resin-base) partialPink acrylic base with wire clasps. Lower cost and easier to add teeth to.
Things to weigh
Bulkier and can be less stable; sometimes used as an interim option.
Codes to ask about
D5211, D5212
Flexible partial (for example Valplast)A flexible nylon-type base with gum-colored clasps.
Things to weigh
Comfortable and no metal clasps show, but harder to reline, repair or add teeth to.
Codes to ask about
D5225, D5226
Cast-metal partialA thin, rigid metal framework with acrylic and teeth.
Things to weigh
Strong and stable, usually the longer-term partial option; metal clasps may show.
Codes to ask about
D5213, D5214
Interim partial (flipper)A simple temporary partial used while healing or waiting for an implant or bridge.
Codes to ask about
D5820, D5821

Implant options

Implant-retained overdentureA denture that snaps onto two or more implants. See the implant guide.
Codes to ask about
D5863, D5865, D6110, D6111
Fixed full-arch implant prosthesisTeeth fixed to four or more implants and not removed at home.
Codes to ask about
D6114, D6115

Materials and techniques

Denture teeth
Acrylic or composite teeth in many shapes and shades; premium teeth tend to resist wear and look more natural.
Bases
Acrylic resin for most dentures; flexible thermoplastic for some partials; a metal framework for cast partials.
Digital dentures
Some labs design and mill or 3D-print dentures from scans.

Benefits, limitations and possible risks

Benefits

  • Lower cost than most fixed options.
  • Non-surgical (unless extractions or implants are needed).
  • Restores appearance and helps with chewing and speech.
  • Partials can be modified if more teeth are lost.

Limitations

  • Lower dentures in particular can move when eating or speaking.
  • Chewing efficiency is lower than with natural teeth or implants.
  • The jawbone shrinks over time, so relines and replacement are needed.
  • There is an adjustment period for speaking and eating.

Possible risks

  • Sore spots that need adjustment.
  • Gum irritation or fungal infection if dentures are not cleaned or are worn overnight.
  • Partials can put strain on the teeth they clip onto and trap plaque against them.

What happens during treatment

  1. 1

    Exam and planning

X-rays and an exam decide which teeth can stay and which type of denture fits.

  2. 2

    Impressions

Preliminary and final impressions or scans of your gums and teeth.

  3. 3

    Bite records and tooth selection

The lab sets teeth based on your bite and the shade and shape you choose.

  4. 4

    Try-in

A wax version lets you check appearance and bite before it is finished.

  5. 5

    Delivery

The denture is fitted and you get care instructions.

  6. 6

    Adjustments

Follow-up visits fix sore spots as you get used to it.

Recovery and maintenance

  • Expect a few weeks to get used to eating and speaking. Start with soft foods cut into small pieces.
  • Take dentures out at night unless your dentist says otherwise, and clean them daily.
  • Immediate dentures need several adjustments and usually a reline after a few months.
  • Have the fit checked regularly; a loose denture usually needs a reline, not more adhesive.

What affects the cost

Full or partial
Full dentures and partials are priced differently, and partials vary by material (acrylic, flexible or metal framework).
Materials and quality tier
Economy, standard and premium dentures differ in the teeth and base materials used, fit and appearance.
Extractions
Removing remaining teeth is billed separately from the denture.
Immediate dentures
A same-day denture usually needs a reline later, which may be an additional cost.
Adjustments and relines
Ask how many follow-up adjustments are included.
One arch or two
Prices are usually per arch.

Common additional charges

These are billed separately at many offices. Not every patient needs them.

ExtractionsEach tooth removed is a separate fee.
AlveoloplastySmoothing the bone after extractions so the denture fits.
Tissue conditioningA soft temporary liner while gums heal.
RelineOften needed a few months after an immediate denture.
SedationIf you choose it for extractions.

Procedure fee or total case cost?

Denture prices are usually per arch. A full case can include extractions, bone smoothing, an immediate denture, a later reline or a new final denture. Ask for the total for both arches and every step.

Paying with insurance, without insurance, or with Medicaid/CHIP

With insurance

Most dental plans cover part of dentures as a major service, subject to the deductible, annual maximum and replacement limits (often once every 5 to 10 years).

Without insurance

Without insurance you pay the office's fee for the denture and any extractions. Ask for an itemized plan and payment options.

Medicaid and CHIP

Coverage for dentures under Texas Medicaid and CHIP is limited and depends on age and plan. The front desk can check what your plan covers before treatment.

Accepted at Arlington, Grand Prairie, and Commerce, subject to eligibility and plan verification.

Alternative treatments

Alternatives depend on your teeth and health. Ask your dentist to explain the trade-offs of each option, including doing nothing.

Implant-retained overdenture
More stable, at a higher cost.
Fixed full-arch implant teeth
Not removable; highest cost.
Bridges or single implants
For a few missing teeth when neighboring teeth are healthy.

Codes to ask your insurer about

Insurers price treatment by ADA CDT procedure code. The office confirms the exact code for your treatment; labels here are plain-English summaries.

Questions to ask your dentist

  • Is this price for one arch or both?
  • Which quality tier is this, and what is the difference?
  • Are extractions, adjustments and a reline included?
  • For partials: acrylic, flexible or metal, and why?
  • How long until I have my final denture?

Frequently asked questions

How much do dentures cost?

It depends on full versus partial, materials, and whether extractions are needed. Prices on these pages are labeled as starting prices or require an exam, and your dentist confirms your cost.

Can I get dentures the same day?

Immediate dentures can be placed the same day teeth are removed. They usually need adjustments and a reline as the gums heal.

Will insurance pay for dentures?

Many plans pay part of the cost as a major service, with limits on how often dentures can be replaced. Ask your insurer for a pre-treatment estimate.

Flexible or metal partial: which is better?

Neither is better for everyone. Flexible partials hide clasps and feel comfortable but are harder to adjust or repair. Metal partials are rigid, thin and easier to add to. Your dentist considers your remaining teeth and bite.
