What the treatment is

Most emergency visits start with a focused exam and X-ray to find the cause of pain. The dentist then explains options, which may be treated the same day or scheduled.

The goal of the first visit is relief and a diagnosis. Definitive treatment, such as a root canal and crown, may take more visits.

Why it may be recommended

  • Severe or throbbing toothache, or pain that wakes you up.
  • Swelling of the gum or face.
  • A broken, cracked or knocked-out tooth.
  • A lost filling or crown with pain or sharp edges.
  • Bleeding after an extraction that will not slow.

Treatment types and variations

Tap a type to see when it is used and what to weigh. Your dentist recommends options after examining you.

Common emergencies

Toothache or abscessOften needs a root canal or extraction; drainage may be needed for swelling.

Broken toothMay need smoothing, a filling, a crown or extraction depending on the break.

D0140
Knocked-out adult toothTime matters. Hold it by the crown, do not scrub it, keep it in milk or in your cheek, and get to a dentist right away. Do not re-insert baby teeth.
Lost crown or fillingThe crown may be re-cemented if undamaged; a temporary filling can protect the tooth.
Codes to ask about
D2920, D2940
Palliative treatmentMinor treatment to relieve pain when the full procedure is scheduled later.

Materials and techniques

Temporary materials
Sedative fillings and temporary crowns protect teeth until definitive treatment.

Benefits, limitations and possible risks

Benefits

  • Fast relief and a diagnosis.
  • Can prevent a minor problem from getting worse.

Limitations

  • The first visit may only relieve pain; follow-up treatment is still needed.
  • Antibiotics alone do not fix the cause of a dental infection.

Possible risks

  • Delaying care can let an infection spread.

What happens during treatment

  1. 1

    Call the office

Describe your symptoms; ask about same-day availability.

  2. 2

    Focused exam and X-ray

    To find the cause.

  3. 3

    Options and costs

    Explained before any treatment starts.

  4. 4

    Relief or treatment

Done the same day when possible, or scheduled.

Recovery and maintenance

  • Depends on the treatment; follow the office's instructions.
  • Take any prescribed medicine exactly as directed.

What affects the cost

The exam
A limited (problem-focused) exam and X-ray is the starting cost of most emergency visits.
Treatment needed
Relief may involve a filling, extraction, root canal or medication. Each is priced separately.
Timing
Ask whether after-hours or weekend visits cost more.

Common additional charges

These are billed separately at many offices. Not every patient needs them.

Additional X-raysIf more than one area is involved.
TreatmentExtraction, root canal, filling or drainage.

Procedure fee or total case cost?

The emergency fee covers the exam and X-ray. Treatment that day or later is added. Ask for the cost before treatment begins.

Paying with insurance, without insurance, or with Medicaid/CHIP

With insurance

Most plans cover emergency exams and X-rays, often as preventive or basic services. Treatment is covered according to its own category.

Without insurance

Without insurance you pay the exam and X-ray fee, then the fee for any treatment you choose. Ask for the cost before treatment begins.

Medicaid and CHIP

Texas Medicaid and CHIP cover emergency dental services for eligible children, and some limited emergency care for adults. The office verifies eligibility.

Accepted at Arlington, Grand Prairie, and Commerce, subject to eligibility and plan verification.

Alternative treatments

Alternatives depend on your teeth and health. Ask your dentist to explain the trade-offs of each option, including doing nothing.

Hospital emergency room
Needed for breathing or swallowing problems, spreading swelling, heavy bleeding or facial injury. ERs usually cannot fix the tooth itself.

Codes to ask your insurer about

Insurers price treatment by ADA CDT procedure code. The office confirms the exact code for your treatment; labels here are plain-English summaries.

D0140Limited oral evaluation, problem focused
D0220Periapical X-ray, first image
D9110Palliative treatment of dental pain
D2920Re-cement or re-bond crown
D2940Protective (temporary) restoration

Questions to ask your dentist

  • Can I be seen today?
  • What does the emergency visit fee include?
  • If I need treatment, what will it cost before you start?

Frequently asked questions

How much is an emergency dental visit?

The visit usually starts with an exam and X-ray fee. Any treatment, such as an extraction or root canal, is priced separately and explained before it starts.

Should I go to the ER for a toothache?

Go to a hospital ER if swelling affects breathing or swallowing, bleeding will not stop, or you have a facial injury. For other dental pain, a dental office can usually diagnose and treat the cause.
