Root canal treatment cost in North Texas

A root canal removes infected or inflamed tissue from inside a tooth so the tooth can be kept. Molars cost more than front teeth because they have more canals.

Participating practices: Sonría Dentista of Arlington, Sonría Dentista of Grand Prairie, Sonría Dentista of Commerce and Sonría Dentista of Paris.

What the treatment is

Inside each tooth is the pulp, soft tissue with nerves and blood vessels that runs through narrow canals in the roots. Deep decay, a crack or an injury can let bacteria reach the pulp, causing inflammation or infection.

During a root canal, the dentist or an endodontist (root canal specialist) cleans and shapes the canals, disinfects them, and fills and seals them. The tooth then needs a filling or build-up, and back teeth usually need a crown to protect them from breaking.

Why it may be recommended

  • Lingering pain to hot or cold, or spontaneous toothache.
  • An abscess, swelling or a pimple-like bump on the gum.
  • A tooth that has died after an injury, sometimes with darkening.
  • Deep decay that has reached the nerve.
  • Sometimes there are no symptoms and the problem is found on an X-ray.

Treatment types and variations

Tap a type to see when it is used and what to weigh. Your dentist recommends options after examining you.

By tooth

The number and shape of canals is the biggest difference in time and fee.

Front tooth (anterior)Usually one canal.

Premolar (bicuspid)One or two canals, occasionally three.
Codes to ask about
D3320
MolarUsually three or four canals, which can be narrow and curved.

More complex situations

RetreatmentRedoing a previous root canal that has become reinfected or did not heal. The old filling material must be removed first.
Codes to ask about
D3346, D3347, D3348
Calcified or curved canalsCanals that have narrowed with age or past trauma, or that curve sharply, take longer and may need a specialist with a microscope and CBCT imaging.
Emergency pulp treatmentRemoving the inflamed pulp to relieve pain before completing the root canal at a later visit.
Codes to ask about
D3221
Apicoectomy (root-end surgery)A minor surgery to remove infection at the tip of the root when a root canal alone has not healed it.
Codes to ask about
D3410, D3421, D3425
Specialist treatmentGeneral dentists perform many root canals; complex molars, retreatments and surgery are often referred to an endodontist, whose fees are usually higher.
Baby teethChildren's teeth may get a pulpotomy instead. See the children's dentistry guide.

After the root canal

Core build-upRebuilds the inside of the tooth before a crown.
Codes to ask about
D2950
PostSometimes placed in a canal to help hold the build-up when little tooth is left.
Codes to ask about
D2954, D2952
Crown or onlayRecommended for most back teeth to protect against fracture. Some front teeth only need a filling.

Materials and techniques

Instruments
Flexible nickel-titanium files shape the canals; disinfecting rinses clean them.
Filling the canals
Gutta-percha, a rubber-like material, and a sealer fill the cleaned canals.
Imaging
X-rays guide treatment; a 3D scan (CBCT) may be used for complex anatomy.
Rubber dam
A thin sheet that isolates the tooth to keep it clean and dry.

Benefits, limitations and possible risks

Benefits

  • Keeps your natural tooth.
  • Relieves pain from an inflamed or infected nerve.
  • Usually avoids the cost and steps of replacing a missing tooth.

Limitations

  • The tooth becomes more brittle and often needs a crown, which adds cost.
  • Not every tooth can be saved, for example when it is cracked down the root.
  • Healing of the bone around the root takes time and is checked on later X-rays.

Possible risks

  • Tenderness for a few days after treatment.
  • Persistent or returning infection that may need retreatment, surgery or extraction.
  • A file can separate in a canal, or a canal may not be fully found; specialists have tools for these situations.
  • Tooth fracture, especially if the crown is delayed.

What happens during treatment

  1. 1

    Diagnosis

Exam, tests and X-rays confirm the problem and the tooth's anatomy.

  2. 2

    Numbing and isolation

Local anesthetic is given and a rubber dam placed.

  3. 3

    Cleaning and shaping

An opening is made in the top of the tooth, and the canals are cleaned, shaped and disinfected.

  4. 4

    Filling the canals

The canals are filled and sealed. Sometimes medicine is placed between visits instead.

  5. 5

    Sealing the tooth

A temporary or permanent filling closes the opening.

  6. 6

    Crown

A crown is placed at a later visit for most back teeth.

Recovery and maintenance

  • Soreness when biting for a few days is common. Your dentist will advise on pain relievers that are safe for you.
  • Avoid chewing hard foods on the tooth until the final restoration is in place.
  • Do not delay the crown; the temporary filling is not meant to last.
  • Call the office for swelling, a fever, or pain that gets worse after a few days.

What affects the cost

Which tooth
Front teeth have one canal, premolars one or two, and molars three or more. Price rises with the number of canals.
Retreatment
Redoing an old root canal costs more than a first-time treatment.
Complexity and specialist
Calcified or curved canals may need an endodontist, microscope or CBCT scan.
The crown afterwards
A crown is a separate procedure and often costs as much as the root canal itself.

Common additional charges

These are billed separately at many offices. Not every patient needs them.

Exam and X-raysDiagnostic X-rays before, during and after treatment.
CBCT scanFor complex cases.
Emergency pain relief visitIf the nerve is removed in one visit and the root canal finished later.
Build-up, post and crownThe final restoration is billed separately.

Procedure fee or total case cost?

The root canal fee covers cleaning, shaping and filling the canals of one tooth. For the full cost of saving that tooth, add the exam and X-rays, any build-up or post, and the crown. Ask for one total.

Paying with insurance, without insurance, or with Medicaid/CHIP

With insurance

Many plans cover root canals as a basic or major service after the deductible. The crown afterwards is usually covered as a major service.

Without insurance

Without insurance, ask for the total cost of the root canal and the crown together.

Medicaid and CHIP

Texas Medicaid and CHIP may cover root canals for eligible children when medically necessary. The office verifies eligibility.

Accepted at Arlington, Grand Prairie, and Commerce, subject to eligibility and plan verification.

Alternative treatments

Alternatives depend on your teeth and health. Ask your dentist to explain the trade-offs of each option, including doing nothing.

Extraction
Usually lower cost today, but replacing the tooth later with an implant, bridge or partial denture often costs more.
Extraction without replacement
Possible for some teeth, but neighboring teeth can drift and chewing may be affected.
Monitoring
Only in specific situations where the dentist finds no active disease; ask what would make treatment necessary.

Codes to ask your insurer about

Insurers price treatment by ADA CDT procedure code. The office confirms the exact code for your treatment; labels here are plain-English summaries.

Questions to ask your dentist

  • Which tooth is it, and how many canals?
  • Will you do it here, or refer me to a specialist?
  • Will I need a build-up, post and crown, and what is the total?
  • What is the chance this tooth can be saved long-term?
  • What happens if I wait?

Frequently asked questions

Is a root canal cheaper than an extraction?

An extraction usually costs less today, but replacing the missing tooth later with an implant or bridge often costs more than saving it.

Why do I need a crown after a root canal?

Back teeth become more brittle after a root canal, and a crown helps prevent them from cracking.

Does a root canal hurt?

The procedure is done with local anesthetic, and many patients compare it to getting a filling. The tooth can be sore for a few days afterwards.

What is retreatment?

Redoing a root canal that has become reinfected or did not heal. It costs more because old material must be removed first.
