What the treatment is

Orthodontic treatment starts with records (photos, X-rays and impressions or scans) and a treatment plan. Braces are adjusted at regular visits, and a retainer keeps teeth in place afterwards.

Comprehensive treatment addresses the whole bite. Limited treatment addresses a specific problem, such as a few crooked front teeth.

Why it may be recommended

  • Crowded or spaced teeth.
  • Overbite, underbite, crossbite or open bite.
  • Teeth that are hard to clean because of crowding.

What affects the cost

Length and complexity
Mild crowding takes less time than bite correction, and the total fee reflects that.
Type of braces
Metal braces usually cost less than ceramic (tooth-colored) braces.
What the total includes
Ask whether records, adjustments, emergency visits and retainers are included.
Age
Adult treatment can take longer and is sometimes priced differently from teen treatment.

Common additional charges

These are billed separately at many offices. Not every patient needs them.

RecordsSometimes separate.
RetainersSometimes separate; replacements usually are.
ExtractionsIf teeth need removal for space.

Procedure fee or total case cost?

Orthodontics is usually one total fee paid over time. Make sure the quote states what is included, especially records and retainers.

Paying with insurance, without insurance, or with Medicaid/CHIP

With insurance

Some dental plans include an orthodontic benefit, usually a lifetime maximum and often for children only. Check your plan's orthodontic coverage and age limits.

Without insurance

Most offices offer monthly payment plans for orthodontic treatment. Ask for the total fee, the down payment and the monthly amount.

Medicaid and CHIP

Texas Medicaid and CHIP generally cover braces only when they are medically necessary, such as a severe bite problem, and prior approval is required. Cosmetic straightening is not covered.

Accepted at Arlington and Commerce, subject to eligibility and plan verification.

Alternative treatments

Alternatives depend on your teeth and health. Ask your dentist to explain the trade-offs of each option, including doing nothing.

Clear aligners
Removable; suitability depends on the case.
Limited treatment
For minor issues.

Codes to ask your insurer about

Insurers price treatment by ADA CDT procedure code. The office confirms the exact code for your treatment; labels here are plain-English summaries.
