Dental implants cost in North Texas

An implant replaces a missing tooth with a post placed in the jawbone, topped with a crown. It is usually priced as several parts, which is why quotes vary so much.

Participating practices: Sonría Dentista of Arlington, Sonría Dentista of Grand Prairie, Sonría Dentista of Commerce and Sonría Dentista of Paris.

What the treatment is

A dental implant has three parts: the implant post (usually titanium or zirconia) placed in the bone, an abutment that connects to it, and the crown, bridge or denture you see. Many offices price these separately.

Treatment usually happens over several visits across a few months, because the bone needs time to bond to the post (osseointegration) before the final teeth are attached. Some cases allow temporary teeth on the day of surgery.

Implants can replace a single tooth, several teeth with an implant bridge, or a whole arch with an implant-retained removable denture or a fixed full-arch prosthesis.

Why it may be recommended

  • Replacing a missing tooth without shaping the neighboring teeth for a bridge.
  • Stabilizing a loose lower or upper denture.
  • Replacing several or all teeth with a fixed or more secure option.
  • Implants are not right for everyone. Uncontrolled diabetes, smoking, some medications, radiation to the jaw and active gum disease can affect healing and are reviewed before treatment.

Implant-retained removable denture (overdenture)Two or more implants with attachments that snap a denture in place. You remove it to clean.
Often used for
People whose lower denture moves when they eat or talk.
Codes to ask about

Fixed full-arch implant prosthesisFour or more implants support a full arch of teeth that only the dentist removes. Sometimes marketed under names like All-on-4.
Things to weigh
Highest cost; needs careful cleaning and periodic professional maintenance.

Bone graft at implant placementAdded when part of the implant would otherwise be exposed.

Materials and techniques

Titanium implants
The most widely used and studied implant material.
Zirconia implants
A metal-free ceramic option; fewer long-term studies and fewer restorative options.
Abutments
Titanium, zirconia, or a combination. Custom abutments are designed for each patient.
Crowns and full-arch teeth
Zirconia, porcelain fused to metal, or acrylic on a metal frame for full-arch cases.

Benefits, limitations and possible risks

Benefits

  • Does not require shaping neighboring teeth.
  • Replaces the root, which helps maintain bone in that area.
  • Can make dentures much more stable.
  • Fixed options feel and function more like natural teeth.

Limitations

  • Highest upfront cost of tooth-replacement options.
  • Requires surgery and months of healing.
  • Not everyone has enough bone without grafting.
  • Needs ongoing cleaning and professional maintenance, like natural teeth.

Possible risks

  • Infection, swelling and bruising after surgery.
  • The implant may fail to bond with the bone and need to be removed.
  • Nerve injury causing numbness in the lip or chin (rare, more relevant in the lower jaw).
  • Sinus problems with upper implants.
  • Peri-implantitis: gum and bone infection around an implant over time, more likely with smoking, diabetes and poor cleaning.
  • Mechanical problems such as a loose screw or chipped crown.

What happens during treatment

  1. 1

    Consultation and imaging

Exam, X-rays and often a CBCT scan to plan.

  2. 2

    Extraction and graft (if needed)

The tooth is removed and the site may be grafted, followed by healing.

  3. 3

    Implant placement

The implant is placed in the bone under local anesthetic, with or without sedation.

  4. 4

    Healing

Typically a few months while the bone bonds to the implant.

  5. 5

    Abutment and impression

The abutment is attached and a scan or impression is taken.

  6. 6

    Final teeth

The crown, bridge or denture is attached and the bite is adjusted.

Recovery and maintenance

  • Expect swelling and soreness for several days; follow the office's instructions on medication, ice and diet.
  • Do not smoke; it raises the risk of implant failure.
  • Brush and floss around implants daily. Water flossers and special brushes can help.
  • Keep regular cleanings; implant maintenance visits may be recommended.

What affects the cost

What the price includes
Ask whether the price covers the post, abutment and crown, or only the post. This is the biggest reason two quotes look different.
Bone grafting
If the jawbone is thin, a bone graft or sinus lift may be needed first, which adds cost and time.
Imaging and planning
A 3D scan (CBCT) is often used to plan placement and may be billed separately.
Extraction first
If the tooth is still there, removing it is a separate procedure.
Number of teeth
Replacing several teeth may cost less per tooth with an implant bridge or implant-supported denture.
Sedation
IV or oral sedation adds a separate fee.
Materials and lab
Custom abutments, zirconia and full-arch prostheses have higher lab costs.

Common additional charges

These are billed separately at many offices. Not every patient needs them.

CBCT scan3D imaging for planning.
ExtractionRemoving the failing tooth.
Bone graft or sinus liftWhen there is not enough bone.
Surgical guideFor guided placement.
Healing abutment or temporary teethSometimes billed separately.
SedationNitrous oxide, oral or IV sedation.
Implant maintenancePeriodic cleanings and checks after treatment.

Procedure fee or total case cost?

An implant case can include many fees: imaging, extraction, grafting, the implant, the abutment and the crown, plus sedation. A low advertised price may cover only the implant post. Ask for a written plan that lists every step and its fee.

Paying with insurance, without insurance, or with Medicaid/CHIP

With insurance

Many dental plans cover part of an implant as a major service, often around half after the deductible, up to the plan's annual maximum. Some plans exclude implants or cover only the crown. Ask your insurer for a pre-treatment estimate.

Without insurance

Without insurance you pay the office's full fee. Ask for an itemized treatment plan and whether payment plans or financing are available.

Medicaid and CHIP

Texas Medicaid and CHIP generally do not cover dental implants. Ask the front desk which tooth-replacement options your plan does cover.

Accepted at Arlington, Grand Prairie, and Commerce, subject to eligibility and plan verification.

Alternative treatments

Alternatives depend on your teeth and health. Ask your dentist to explain the trade-offs of each option, including doing nothing.

Fixed bridge
Uses neighboring teeth as anchors; no surgery.
Removable partial denture
Lower cost and replaces several teeth.
Complete denture
For a whole arch, lowest upfront cost.
Leaving the space
Sometimes reasonable; ask what changes to expect.

Codes to ask your insurer about

Insurers price treatment by ADA CDT procedure code. The office confirms the exact code for your treatment; labels here are plain-English summaries.

Questions to ask your dentist

  • Does this price include the post, abutment and crown?
  • Will I need a bone graft or a 3D scan, and what do they cost?
  • How many visits and how many months should I expect?
  • Who places the implant and who makes the crown?
  • What maintenance will the implant need, and what happens if it fails?
  • Do you offer payment plans or financing?

Frequently asked questions

Why do dental implant prices vary so much?

Prices often cover different things. Some quotes include only the implant post, others include the abutment and crown. Bone grafting, imaging and extractions can also be billed separately.

Does insurance cover dental implants?

Some dental plans cover part of the cost as a major service, up to the annual maximum; others exclude implants. A pre-treatment estimate from your insurer tells you what your plan pays.

Are implants cheaper than dentures?

Implants usually cost more up front than dentures. Some patients compare the long-term cost, since dentures may need relines or replacement over time. Your dentist can explain which option suits your mouth.

What is the difference between an overdenture and a fixed full arch?

An overdenture snaps onto implants and you remove it to clean. A fixed full arch is attached to implants and only the dentist removes it. Fixed options need more implants and usually cost more.
