What the treatment is

The temporomandibular joints connect your lower jaw to your skull. Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) include muscle pain, joint inflammation and problems with the disc inside the joint.

An evaluation looks at your jaw joint, bite, muscles and history. Treatment may include a custom splint, bite adjustments and home care, and sometimes referral to another specialist.

Most TMD symptoms improve with conservative, reversible treatment. Irreversible treatments, such as major bite changes, are generally not a first step.

Why it may be recommended

  • Jaw pain, clicking with pain, or locking.
  • Headaches or ear pain linked to the jaw.
  • Pain when chewing or opening wide.
