What the treatment is

Porcelain veneers are made in a lab and bonded to lightly prepared teeth. Composite veneers are shaped from tooth-colored resin directly on the tooth, usually in one visit.

Veneers cover the front surface only. They do not fix crooked bites or replace missing teeth.

Why it may be recommended

  • Discoloration that whitening cannot fix.
  • Chipped, worn or uneven teeth.
  • Small gaps.

Treatment types and variations

Tap a type to see when it is used and what to weigh. Your dentist recommends options after examining you.

Materials

Porcelain veneersLab-made ceramic; stain-resistant.
Things to weigh
Usually requires removing some enamel, which is irreversible.

Materials and techniques

Porcelain and resin
Porcelain resists staining; composite can be polished and repaired.

Benefits, limitations and possible risks

Benefits

  • Can greatly change appearance.
  • Porcelain resists staining.

Limitations

  • Enamel removal is irreversible for most porcelain veneers.
  • Veneers can chip and eventually need replacement.
  • Not for people with untreated decay or gum disease.

Possible risks

  • Sensitivity.
  • Debonding or chipping, especially with grinding.

What happens during treatment

  1. 1

    Consultation

    Goals, photos and a mock-up.

  2. 2

    Preparation

Light enamel reduction and a scan.

  3. 3

    Bonding

    Veneers are bonded and polished.

Recovery and maintenance

  • Some sensitivity for a few days.
  • A night guard may be recommended if you grind.

What affects the cost

Material
Porcelain veneers cost more than composite veneers and usually last longer.
Number of teeth
Veneers are priced per tooth, so the total depends on how many teeth are treated.
Other treatment first
Cavities, gum problems or bite issues may need treatment before veneers are placed.

Common additional charges

These are billed separately at many offices. Not every patient needs them.

Mock-up or wax-upSometimes separate.
WhiteningOften done first to set the shade.
Night guardTo protect veneers.

Procedure fee or total case cost?

Veneers are priced per tooth; many cases involve 4 to 10 teeth. Multiply and add any preliminary treatment.

Paying with insurance, without insurance, or with Medicaid/CHIP

With insurance

Most dental plans treat veneers as cosmetic and do not cover them. Send your insurance information to the office to check.

Without insurance

Without insurance you pay the office's per-tooth fee for the veneers you choose.

Medicaid and CHIP

Texas Medicaid and CHIP generally do not cover cosmetic veneers.

Accepted at Arlington, Grand Prairie, and Commerce, subject to eligibility and plan verification.

Alternative treatments

Alternatives depend on your teeth and health. Ask your dentist to explain the trade-offs of each option, including doing nothing.

Whitening
For color only.
Bonding
Small composite repairs.
Orthodontics
For crooked teeth.
Crowns
For heavily damaged teeth.

Codes to ask your insurer about

Insurers price treatment by ADA CDT procedure code. The office confirms the exact code for your treatment; labels here are plain-English summaries.
