What the treatment is

A peroxide-based whitening gel is applied to the teeth while the gums are protected. In-office whitening uses stronger gel under supervision in one visit; take-home whitening uses custom trays and milder gel over days or weeks.

Whitening does not change the color of crowns, veneers or fillings.

Why it may be recommended

  • Yellowing from age, coffee, tea or tobacco.
  • Before cosmetic work, to set the shade.

Treatment types and variations

Tap a type to see when it is used and what to weigh. Your dentist recommends options after examining you.

Benefits, limitations and possible risks

Benefits

  • Non-invasive.
  • Relatively low cost for cosmetic change.

Limitations

  • Results fade over time, especially with staining foods.
  • Some stains (for example from certain medications) respond poorly.

Possible risks

  • Temporary tooth sensitivity.
  • Gum irritation.

What happens during treatment

  1. 1

    Exam

Cavities and gum problems are treated first.

  2. 2

    Whitening

Gel applied in office or at home.

Recovery and maintenance

  • Sensitivity usually fades within days.
  • Limit staining foods for a day or two.

What affects the cost

Starting shade
Deeper or older stains may need more than one session.
Crowns and fillings
Whitening does not change the color of crowns, veneers or fillings, which may need to be replaced to match.
In office or at home
Methods and fees differ.

Common additional charges

These are billed separately at many offices. Not every patient needs them.

Touch-up gelFor take-home maintenance.

Procedure fee or total case cost?

Usually one fee per session or per arch; ask about touch-ups.

Paying with insurance, without insurance, or with Medicaid/CHIP

With insurance

Most dental plans treat whitening as cosmetic and do not cover it. Send your insurance information to the office to check.

Without insurance

Without insurance you pay the office's fee for the whitening session.

Medicaid and CHIP

Texas Medicaid and CHIP generally do not cover cosmetic whitening.

Accepted at Arlington, Grand Prairie, and Commerce, subject to eligibility and plan verification.

Alternative treatments

Alternatives depend on your teeth and health. Ask your dentist to explain the trade-offs of each option, including doing nothing.

Over-the-counter strips
Lower cost, milder results.
Veneers
For stains whitening cannot fix.

Codes to ask your insurer about

Insurers price treatment by ADA CDT procedure code. The office confirms the exact code for your treatment; labels here are plain-English summaries.
